Dark and bold
by Jennifer on May 8, 2018
This is strong, unapologetic, and powerful. It takes a confident, authoritative person to pull it off. Definitely unisex, it smells just as good on my boyfriend as it does on me.
It really is rough and powerful, though. Not for everyone, and not easy to wear. The EdT might be a better option for casual wear, but this really is a gem.

Was very excited to try this one! Very disapointed! Too overpowering and very mature scent! No my cup of tea at all... Same for Velvet orchid!
by Jack on Aug 16, 2017
I originally bought this for my wife to try. After trying it she gave it to me as thought it would be great on a man as well. I sprayed it on myself one day as we were going out and my wife went nuts and wanted to know what smelled so good on me. This can be worn by men. It is floral but also notes of chocolate, citrus, spices and darker earthy scents. This is a winner and lasts a very long time.

Great scent for cold weather. Unique & long lasting.
by Hope on May 17, 2017
I've read through these reviews, and there isn't much I could add that hasn't already been stated. I like the way Sharon describes it, as well as others.
The first time I tried it, I didn't like it so much. I felt a little attacked, probably by the chocolate note (which normally I don't like). Having gone back to it several times, I now appreciate it very much.
Black Orchid smells exotic and like its name sounds. Like every Tom Ford creation I've tested, Black Orchid smells expensive. It's a bit loud and flamboyant but equally intoxicating. This isn't a quiet fragrance, sitting idly by, minding its own business. I doubt anyone could experience it without an emotional reaction.
This is one everyone who loves perfume should smell at some point.
by Janet on May 16, 2017
This perfume is not for everyone. It comes on quite strong, but then mellows down. I love the way it smells on me, but it is like a rich dessert that you want to savor occasionally, but not everyday. I should think it is for a woman who is confident in who she is.

my wife and daughter both like this one by Tom Ford. great for a night out on the town.
GF loves this TF

Beautiful gourmand scent. Chocolates and oranges merged into a a slice of fruity heaven. Good staying power. A winner.
by Denette on Feb 17, 2017
Most Tom Ford fragrances are odd to me, and this one is no exception. In fact, this one made me nauseated upon first sniff. It is a mess of notes that don't seem to be blended very well, and there is something about the combination of notes that makes me feel sick. Money saved.
Original, But Can Be Difficult to Wear
by KE on Feb 14, 2017
This is a good perfume. It is true to the Tom Ford mark in being well crafted and original. However, this is not a perfume everyone will love. That is not a bad thing, and can even be a positive thing. Unfortunately for me, I am torn with this one personally, as, although it's very well made and interesting, it also contains far too much patchouli for me to wear comfortably. And I am not a patchouli hater at all. It just happens to come on too strong on my skin in this fragrance, and can be stifling. So, aside from the occasional wear, not for me.
by Mary Carole on Feb 14, 2017
At first sniff I was convinced I would not like this strangely different scent but a few moments later I couldn't stop sniffing my arm! It's intensely powerful, making no apologies for its extreme boldness. Continually changing just a bit so that you are left wondering what will come next...
Strong and Sexy
by Ashley on Jul 18, 2016
This is such a great scent. It has everything I'm looking for. It's strong and lasts forever. It flower and seductive. Definitely an "evening" perfume, but I'd wear it throughout the day.
by Michael on Jun 27, 2016
My girlfriend bought a sample of this scent and I find it to be very unisex. Love it on her, but I could also see myself wearing it on some occasions.
Thick, heady, carnal and chaotic
by Sharon on Jun 10, 2016
Black Orchid isn't pleasant. It isn't easy. It's falling in love - irrationally and uncontrollably. Love in that raw, lustful and chaotic way. Your hair stands on end as your skin tingles. Your insides flip and thrash all around and it makes you feel sick. Longing invades your mind and prevents any useful thoughts from forming, and your heart beats so hard you can see your skin jump at its pulse points. No matter how much you inhale, you just can't breathe. It's overwhelming, stifling...
And despite all of these terrible (terrific) symptoms, you just can't get enough of that sheer possession and desperation! If you've never experienced falling in love that way, you certainly won't appreciate the chaos that is Black Orchid. It's thick, heady & carnal madness! (And yes, that madness is absolutely unisex!)
Mysterious, syrupy, exotic & peculiar. Unforgivably sexy and dripping with personality - there's nothing else quite like it.
by Amber on Jun 8, 2016
My husband bought this for me. It is delightful and unique. This lasted all night!
by Alishia on Apr 18, 2016
I wanted to like this, it smelled great in the bottle but turned peppery on my skin
Not what I expected, but in a good way!
by Betsy on Apr 15, 2016
When I received my big bottle in the mail, I wasn't sure what to expect. I wasn't sure if I'd like it. I was nervous to try it. Will it smell like sex & nastiness? Or will it smell classy, like something I'd wear to an opera? Suspense.
I try it on, and... it smells like the insence in the head shops I visited in my early 20s! It smells like my hippie/hemp fest days! It reminds me of beaded curtains and Bob Marley posters and ethnic-print fabric and sarongs.
It smells of root beer barrels, dirt and flowers, mushroom hunting in the spring, and ever so slightly of cookies and spices. The far drydown is faint to me, but is a sweet, salty musk.
This is a complex, lovely scent, and not at all highbrow or snobbish. I was surprised at how familiar, approachable, and unpretentious it is.
Highly recommended, if you like a rich, but down-to earth scent experience.
by Rose on Apr 12, 2016
The number of reviews here are testament to the popularity of Black Orchid. Kudos to Ford for creating one of those perfumes of the decade. (and one I actually quite enjoy!) It captures what people want in a perfume these days. We had the floaty purist 90s and now we want something that shouts PERFUME!
It's perfect for night-time, clubbing, glam parties etc, the only problem is its popularity, if you want to smell totally unique. It has that Tom Ford 'branded' feel, designer clothes in black and animal print.
The opening seems spicy/woody to me, with a purple fantasy fruit element, like grapes perhaps or a rich dark floral. The drydown is far more creamy, velvety - sandalwood/vanilla.
I'm not into this perfume myself, but probably only because my clubbing days are in the past, I have no desire for that scene these days, but if I was back in my 20s or early 30s, I'd probably wear this. I used to wear Coco Chanel, which seems the equivalent (your glam little black dress perfume - though they're totally ruined Coco now, humpf!)
Beautiful and unusual
by lls on Jan 15, 2016
...but not for me. This is a beautiful, rich floral oriental, with real depth and fantastic longevity. Unfortunately, the mushroomy black truffle note makes it unwearable for me. (I don't like it in food, either.) I'm glad I experienced it, though.
Complex and Rich
by Elizabeth on Jan 14, 2016
I wanted this to be my Signature scent!! After trying Velvet Orchid I decided to give this a try. I loved it and so did some people I came in contact. Others were unsure and it was so jarring to me that I actually felt a little lightheaded when I first applied it. The dry down was beautiful but it was just slightly too much for an everyday scent. This is a nighttime seductress scent!!
Definitely an experience!
by Anyushka on Jan 13, 2016
Black Orchid is probably more suited for night time but the right woman can pull this off at any time. It is captivating and mesmerising to those who fall immediately under its spell (for some it might take a bit longer to surrender) but I can also see how people shy away from its pungency and insistence (like a noisy tool that doesn't let up), too afraid they might not recover if they are exposed for too long. The scent manages to keep all notes harmoniously together and avoids (just) getting shrill. I'm not sure which note(or notes) it is, but it feels as if something in there would like to get centre stage but is held back and grounded by the base notes - keeping it in check. It is definitely an experience!
I guess this truly is a love/hate fragrance
by rhapsodii on Jan 11, 2016
As someone else said previously in their review, this is a fragrance you either love or hate. Well, I hate it. Jasmine, mandarin, patchouli... these are all notes I adore, so I thought this would be a match made in heaven, but every time I take a whiff, all I can think is "yuck!" Perhaps it's the bergamot -- whatever it is, there is an musky, smoky undercurrent here that makes me recoil.
by Lynn on Dec 15, 2015
...I love this scent the more I wear it! I am amending my first review to Excellant!
by Lynn on Dec 14, 2015
The scent goes on very strong but then settles and becomes softer. I don't think it has the staying power I like... but then, sensitive noses might say this is a good thing. Interesting.. scent... one I'll wear. I am a perfume junky!
not for me
by Ashley on Nov 12, 2015
This perfume is way too strong for me; it kind of punches me in the face with orchid. However, I can see how this would work on someone with the right nose and skin chemistry. If you like floral scents, this is for you.
by VjE on Aug 1, 2015
Im not an expert on scents, I just know what I like. This scent is strong and kind of spicy. Not feminine at all. My husband did not like it.
by Moomoos on Apr 19, 2015
this is an amazing scent. moreso feminine than masculine though...
sweet, longlasting and a head turner. love it...
Unique and long lasting
by Kristen on Mar 30, 2015
Black Orchid by Tom Ford is my favorite fragrance, and it is worth every penny. It is very complex and well constructed, so the fragrance changes after initial application. One spritz is all you need for the entire day. Although it is supposedly for "evening" use, I wear it to work, and I have received many compliments. It is slightly floral, strong vanilla, and intense amber and sandalwood. Very unique.
by Nazia on Feb 24, 2015
This one is very interesting. True orchid scent, which when the scent is richer, almost turns mushroomy. Not a bad thing. It's not something I would like to smell up close, as it has some unsettling quality about it (probably the mushroom factor) but I think it is definitely a very original fragrance.
Rich, sensual fragrance
by Brenda on Jan 22, 2015
A lovely warm fragrance which goes well with a sexy black dress and heels. It probably isn't appropriate for the office but is perfect for an evening out.
by Emily on Jan 18, 2015
This smells a bit like my favorite bar of 72% cocoa dark chocolate. It is very strong, made for a confident and sexy person.
A Tom Ford Masterpiece!
by Beth on Dec 19, 2014
This one. Wow. Deep, dark, seductive. Mysterious and powerful. At first dab, I was very surprised by the strength of Black Orchid. But in short order I realized that this perfume is a mischievous nymph on a journey. Black Orchid morphs into an exquisitely sexy, feminine yet naughty creature that doesn't need to show off to be noticed. Love!
Me at nigth
by Stacia on Dec 18, 2014
Thus far in life, this is my favorite night-time scent. Yes, it's me, entering a room and feeling out to the corners in a confident and secretly seductive way all the while I am standing still. I am generally attracted to oriental style perfume with jasmine and amber in the mix, but this is a scent more complex than that for sure. It is for a feminine and powerful (on the inside) woman that doesn't need to be overpowering in order to dominate when it matters. It not a heavy, heady scent to weigh you down, yet it's not light and flirty, this is for a woman who knows what she's doing.
by Cat on Dec 14, 2014
Starts off strong but settles in powdery. Many are compelled to comment on this scent. It's extraordinary!
by Stephanie on Dec 4, 2014
I've tried a few Tom Ford scents, and haven't been impressed at all. At the prices they are, I expected more. I gave this one a few hours, waiting for the dry down everyone seems to like. It didn't change on me, just remained a rather nauseating, weird sweetish smell. I'm so glad I didn't waste the pretty penny this costs. Maybe this smells better on others, since many people seem to like it. Awful on me.
by Lara on Oct 31, 2014
I really wasn't sure what to make of this one at first, it is very different from other perfumes I have tried. But there was something about it that grew on me and now I just love it. It is quite sharp when I first put it on but them develops into a warm, spicy, dark kind of scent. The key is to put on the tiniest bit, too much and it is way too strong and overpowering. Now I just have to save up to buy a bottle!
by Ariel on Oct 21, 2014
I own this scent and wear it, but I have a love-hate relationship with Black Orchid! It's way too strong when it's first sprayed, and the ylang-ylang of the top note tends to give me a headache so I have to be careful to use VERY LITTLE. The spiciness of the middle notes makes me regret putting it on in the first place....and then the warm, seductive base notes appear, and nothing has ever smelled so incredible or mysterious! I feel like a femme fatale! I love wearing this when I'm wearing dark, dressy clothing and makeup--as others have pointed out, it's not for casual daytime use. I also tend to prefer it in the winter, when one can get away with deeper, more elegant scents.
by Bridgette on Jun 17, 2014
My nose was fully entertained!! Unique and interesting. I dig it! Makes it to the favorites list! Starts out delicious but deep and unique, then a touch of interesting floral, and then the pepper comes out surrounded by light floral and hint of lemon, but I like it. Really nice scent journey! YES!
It grew on me.
by Adrienne on May 21, 2014
This perfum is strong, and I had to get use to it.
by Mario on Jan 26, 2014
this is a signature scent! a tom ford masterpiece! even though it says 'for women' it can still be worn by men. deep and floral. A+!
Always get compliments!
by ann on Jan 24, 2014
I am a HUGE fan of Tom Ford fragrances and beauty products. Every fragrance I have tried by Tom Ford has amazing strength and staying power and this scent is no different. I get compliments every time I wear it .. it is a very bold scent ... not something for a small office. I wear this on special occasions and a fancy night out, its not something for my very casual office or out running errands. I LOVE the bold floral notes now but the first time it was almost overwhelming ... I ended up leaving it on for an evening and every time I got a whiff of my wrist that night I fell more and more in love with the scent.
by Turquoise on Jan 11, 2014
Received it today, sprayed it on two hours ago and just took a sniff and had to write a review! It is very sophisticated! It smelled a little too sweet at first spray but the dry down is very good. It's an orchid and a little pepper smell, in my opinion. I don't think it will last that long maybe another three hours. Definitely sample it!
Powerful and Sexy
by Mimiko on Dec 20, 2013
First time trying a niche perfume and it is definitely something special! It has strong sillage and very long lasting. At first, it is somewhat spicy but after an hour or two, the spiciness dries down a little and it becomes very sweet and addictive. Definitely worth a try!
Doesnt Work With Me
by Dawn on Dec 4, 2013
This fragrance reeks of pepper. It is loud and strong. I had to wash it off immediately.
The rarest, blackest orchid of them all!
by Heather on Aug 9, 2013
This perfume is definitely luxurious and opulent! It is sensual and spicy, modern and timeless! It's very long lasting, that's for sure, and is quite mysterious!
It opens with gardenia and ylang-ylang. Spiciness is achieved when the pepper, cinnamon, ginger, and basil co-mingle. The woody notes of sandalwood and patchouli are just wonderful in this fragrance. The warmer, smoky, earthy base notes of incense and a really creamy vanilla are balanced nicely with the sort of salty black truffle. This perfume has classy darkness! Wear it and wear it well!!
